I’VE WANTED TO RIDE a motorcycle ever since my dad toured 15-year-old me around a Greek island, wind in my face, sun on my skin. But it took seeing several friends get their motorcycle licences — and many years — before I got my own.
There’s a particular confidence that comes from mastering a skill that is both terrifying and thrilling, counterintuitive and instinctive, exhausting and invigorating. When I got my motorcycle licence, I immediately wanted to ride everywhere, all the time. I knew I’d found my thing. But it took a little longer to find my people.
When I first started riding in 2010, women on motorcycles were uncommon. Now, we’re a rapidly growing demographic that has affected change across the industry. Instead of simply lowering existing bikes, or “shrinking and pinking” gear, manufacturers solicit feedback from women riders and produce ergonomically redesigned bikes and a broader range of apparel for this traditionally underserved group. And thanks to social media groups that focus on female ridership, women increasingly see themselves represented and have found ways to connect with one another.
One such group is The Litas, a global collective of women who share a passion for riding motorcycles. In just a decade, The Litas have connected and empowered over 29,000 woman-identifying riders in 344 cities across 36 countries, including Canada, both online and in person.
The Litas helped me find my place in the growing global fellowship of women riders. But even if you’re not a Lita yourself — or you’re just dreaming of feeling the wind in your face on the open road this summer — these Litas-endorsed Canadian routes and tips for riding safer are sure to inspire.

LOCATION: Alberta
Bailey Quinn
Lita since 2015
Ride: Harley-Davidson Street Bob
Favourite route: The Alberta Badlands. The descent into the elevated heat and drama of Drumheller is “a mix of Old West with a Jurassic feel.” In the Rockies, “riding from Highway 1 up the Icefields Parkway [in summer] is a must. It has some of the most breathtaking views in all of Canada.”
Sage advice: “Do a motorcycle course — you learn skills you’d never think to learn. And do get a crash bar for your motorcycle. Mine has not only saved my bike, but my life.”

LOCATION: Ontario
Andrea “Dre” Kutney
Lita since 2018
Ride: 2013 Triumph Speedmaster
Favourite route: A Niagara Peninsula ride that starts on Ridge Road, then runs along the Escarpment to the Niagara Parkway and past the Falls, continuing all the way to Fort Erie. “There are some nice agricultural roads just above Highway 8 — we just keep following the Escarpment.”
Sage advice: “Always ride within your own limits.”

LOCATION: New Brunswick
Kristin Munro
Lita since 2015
Ride: 2006 Harley-Davidson Sportster XL 1200
Favourite route: Munro is always happy to tour around New Brunswick’s Kingston Peninsula; it’s where she spent her first summer learning to ride a motorcycle. “I love the small pulley ferry system. I have a lot of special memories attached to those roads.” Sage advice: “My top tip is an obvious one — don’t drink and ride.”

LOCATION: Manitoba
Marilyn Magtoto
Lita since 2023
Ride: 2020 Triumph Bonneville Bobber Black
Favourite route: A scenic ride that passes through Whiteshell National Park along Highway 307, then winds east into northern Ontario from Kenora to Minaki or Sioux Narrows. “It’s as close to twisties as we can get here in Manitoba.”
Sage advice: “Never ride beyond your own skill level for the sake of others you’re riding with. You have to do a gut check and really know yourself.”

LOCATION: Saskatchewan
Jenna Kovach
Lita since 2017
Ride: Harley-Davidson Sportster Iron 1200
Favourite route: “Looping around the lakes near Fort Qu’apelle always makes for a good ride. And the trip out to Stenen to check out Rawhides Saloon is always worthwhile. It [was] an old school that the owners have converted to a western bar and grill in a town with a population of about 90 people.”
Sage advice: Be defensive. “In Saskatchewan, we take for granted that we can see a long way in many areas. But just because you see someone at an approach doesn’t mean they see you.”

LOCATION: Ontario
Morena Conka
Lita since 2020
Ride: 2015 Harley-Davidson Low Rider
Favourite route: Conka loves to ride around Toronto’s Pearson International Airport. “It’s a short road, but something about it just feels special.” When she wants peace and serenity, she heads north to the Algonquin Highlands and enjoys the stretch from Minden to Dorset: “Nice fresh pavement, beautiful foliage in the fall, and curvy roads.”
Sage advice: “Always look where you’re going and stay humble. Don’t get too cocky. Remember, it’s not just about speed, but control.”
