Gather Craft Kitchen & Bar, Assiniboine Park

Situated in The Leaf, a horticultural attraction where visitors can experience four distinct biomes, Gather serves dishes and botanical cocktails that feature seasonal ingredients from The Leaf gardens — preserved, fermented or straight off the vine. Chef Mike de Groot incorporates local and diverse flavours to create what he calls globally inspired modern prairie cuisine that celebrates the many communities of Manitoba. As part of the Assiniboine Park Conservancy, Gather has implemented various sustainable practices to reduce energy and water use and minimize waste. It’s certified by The Green Restaurant Association for taking steps to help protect both the park and the greater environment.

Brokenhead Wetland Interpretive Trail

Roughly an hour north of Winnipeg, calcareous fen — one of the rarest types of wetland in North America — surrounds a 1.8-kilometre boardwalk (3.6-km out and back) that leads visitors through a boreal forest with interpretive displays — such as teachings from the Brokenhead Ojibway Nation about the concepts of respect, purpose and interconnection — situated along the path. Pause along the wheelchair- and stroller-accessible path to admire the wildlife and read up on the significance of this wetland to the Brokenhead Ojibway Nation, who historically gathered food and have held sacred ceremonies here for more than 300 years.
