Opened in 2012, L’Arche Tova Café was founded with the goal of creating restaurant jobs and volunteer opportunities for people with intellectual disabilities. It’s part of L’Arche Winnipeg, a non-profit organization that provides people with intellectual disabilities access to homes and social connections. Today, the café gives staff and volunteers the chance to connect with others in the community while developing valuable workplace skills. Given the enthusiasm of guests and the bustling atmosphere, it’s clear that the café has succeeded in its mission — creating a place where community, inclusivity and great food go hand in hand.
Nestled in Winnipeg’s Transcona neighbourhood, the bistro-style café has become one of the city’s hidden gems, earning rave reviews over the years. While the menu is affordably priced and the comfort food is homey, what keeps locals coming back is the attentive service. At peak brunch time on any given Sunday, there’s always a lineup. This spot is known for the $10 Blue Collar Special — the most popular all-day breakfast — and for the fan-favourite cinnamon buns, baked fresh in-house every morning. Manager Rob DeJonge says L’Arche Tova Café isn’t just a business — it was created as a social enterprise and a safe, inclusive space where people can build skills and meaningful connections. CAA
