Polyester Plus, Hamilton
Hamilton’s James Street North strip got a little funkier last year with the opening of Polyester Plus, an eclectic clothing boutique and gift shop featuring plus-size vintage garments from the 1960s to today. (Sizes range from L to 4XL.) The buzzy shop fits in snugly with the lively street scene, nestled among coffee shops, restaurants and other like-minded independent businesses. Its retro fashion vibe is rounded out by quirky artist-made items like ceramics, prints, stickers, pins and jewelry. Many products are also available online.

GreenUP Ecology Park
GreenUP Ecology Park is a five-acre oasis in Peterborough dedicated to sustainable landscapes. Here you’ll find diverse display gardens and naturalized areas featuring native plants. Kids can engage with the dedicated children’s gardens and natural play areas, while all visitors can learn from displays and workshops on topics such as composting. GreenUP also serves as an example of community engagement in environmental stewardship with such initiatives as volunteer-led planting and harvesting. The park is open Thursdays through Sundays from May until mid-October, and connects with the Trans Canada Trail. It's a great spot for birdwatching — you may see migratory birds as well as nesting songbirds such as the American Redstart and Gray Catbird. You can bring a picnic and even take something home: the on-site native plant and tree nursery offers local species that support ecosystems and help attract pollinators.
